SONANCE
Open HOA ambience and noise corpus for immersive audio codec evaluation.
SONANCE (Spatial Open Noise and Ambience Corpus for Codec Evaluation) is an open corpus of Higher-Order Ambisonics recordings of ambiences, noise environments, and soundscapes, designed for validation of immersive audio codecs such as MPEG-H 3D Audio, Dolby AC-4, LC3plus, and USAC. Diffuse and stochastic ambience material is particularly demanding for lossy compression algorithms, revealing artefacts invisible in music or speech testing.
The project is a student research initiative (2026 edition) co-mentored by Dr D. Koszewski (Intel), supervised by me. Recordings use HOA microphone arrays up to 5th order in diverse acoustic environments, with full metadata documentation.
